How to prevent colic effectively?

Proper feeding

Colic is often connected to too fast and greedy swalllowing of milk. As a result the baby starts to choke and swallow air, which then remains in intestines and causes tummy ache and wind. Pay attention to how your baby latches on to your nipple. If he has problems latching on when your breasts are full, try expressing some milk first with a breast pump. If the milk flow is too fast, cool the nipple a little bit with an ice cube. If you feed your baby from a bottle, use anti-colic teats and bottles, and make sure that milk fills the teat during feeding. After your baby has finished eating, make sure he burps. It allows bringing up wind from the tummy. In order to burp your baby, hold your baby over your shoulder, so that the baby's head rests on your shoulder, and remember to lay a muslin cloth under your baby in case he brings up some of his feed. You can pat the baby gently on his back to help him burp.

Proper diet

I have noticed that my baby often had colic after I myself had eaten something indigestible. Colic can be caused by a diet that contains bloating food products: plums, cherries, pears, cabbage, beans, soya, broccoli, califlower, leek, ,onion, garlic, as well as indigestible, fried foods. Try to avoid them until your baby is 3 months old. You can then start introducing them to your diet gradually. Sometimes colic can also be affected by unsuitable formula milk. Try using a mix that helps prevent colic. Your baby might also be intolerant to lactose, which is why you should see a paediatrician if the colic recurs.

Bathing and compresses

When my baby suffered from colic, I found warm baths and water massaging very helpful. During bathing pour your baby's tummy with a gentl warm stream of water. If your child doesn't like to bathe, iron a muslin cloth, wait until it cools a bit (so that it's warm, not hot!), and lay the cloth on your baby's tummy. Such warm compress should ease the pain.

Anti-colic massage

ou can start massaging your baby at the end of his first month, when his umbilical stump has healed. If your baby often suffers from colic, massage his tummy few times a day (one time isn't enough), preferably 30 minutes after feeding or when you're changing his nappy, but don't massage your baby when he's already crying and is irritated - it will just make things worse. Thanks to systematic massaging, colic will appear less often, and it will be less painful. Don't massage your baby directly after feeding. Warm the room and undress your baby so that you have access to bare skin on his tummy. I recommend doing the massage on a changing mat or a blanket spread between your legs. Massage the baby's tummy with slow movements, stroking the tummy gently with your warm hands (use baby oil to help your hands glide over your baby's skin). Repeat it about six times. Hold your baby's legs and move them gently towards the tummy and back. Next do the Moon and Sun exercise: draw a semi-circular Moon an the baby's tummy with one hand, moving in a clockwise direction from 12 to 6 o'clock. Use your other hand to draw the Sun (a full circle), from 6 to 6 o'clock, also in a clockwise direction. Move your baby's legs again towards the tummy, hold them for about six seconds, and straighten them. Repeat the series a few times. It's so much fun, children love it.
